Learn more about getting dental implants in San Diego, and how they work.
Are you an adult living in San Diego, CA, who is missing one, several or even all of their teeth? Particularly if you are dealing with complete tooth loss you may be worried that the only option is to get dentures. Well, you’ll be relieved to hear that our San Diego, CA, implant dentist Dr. Joseph Yang offers dental implants to healthy adults who are missing everything from one to all of their teeth.
Here’s How a Dental Implant Works
When most people think of a dental implant they imagine the small titanium screw that is placed into the jawbone; however, an implant is made up of three different parts:
- The base: This is the metal screw that is surgically placed into the jawbone to provide a strong, durable foundation from which to support a false tooth.
- The abutment: This structure is placed over top of the implant and it’s designed to connect the implant with the false tooth.
- The false tooth: If you are replacing a single tooth then a dental crown will be placed over the abutment to complete the restoration; however, if you are missing several teeth then a dental bridge or dentures can also be secured on top of the implants.
Getting Implants with Dentures
If you are missing all of your upper or lower teeth you may be wondering whether implants are still right for you. You’ll be happy to hear that implants can replace as many teeth as you need. Our San Diego restorative dentist even offers All-on-4, a system that allows patients to get implants and teeth in the same day. During this visit we will place implants into the jawbone and then immediately place temporary dentures over top of the implant.
Once the implants and the jawbone have naturally fused together then we can remove the temporary dentures and secure the permanent dentures on top.

Did you know that bone loss happens after tooth loss? it's true. Your jaw bone recedes after teeth are extracted, says the National Institutes of Health. Also, conventional bridgework and dentures cannot correct this problem. If you have substantial tooth loss and wish to improve your jaw bone integrity, oral function, and facial appearance, explore All-On-Four at the San Diego Dental Implant Center. Dr. Joseph Yang is the expert in these "teeth in a day."
Just what is "All-On-Four?"
All-On-Four is a unique tooth replacement system. Permanent, stable, and bone-building, All-On-Four dentures replace teeth beautifully and recreate natural oral function and bone strength.
How does All-On-Four work? In short, the San Diego dentist inserts four titanium implants into the jawbone. These small metal devices support a full custom-made denture, allowing the patient to experience realistic biting, chewing, and speaking. There's no speech slurring, compromised chewing (Yes, you can eat corn on the cob.) or gooey adhesives common to traditional tooth replacements.
Amazingly, the dentist accomplishes the All-On-Four treatment in just one day (two to three hours per arch) at the San Diego Dental Implant Center. A careful pre-procedure examination with digital imaging tells your dentist if you're a candidate for these outstanding artificial teeth. Most people are!
Why are dental implants so stable?
It's because of a natural process called osseointegration. Here's how it works. When the dentist places a titanium implant into the jaw, the bone starts to adhere to the device almost immediately. Over several weeks, the healing process is complete, allowing the patient to bite and chew his or her favorite foods, to speak normally and to brush and floss easily.
With All-On-Four dental implants and tooth replacements, the patient has a great smile, youthful facial contours, and increased self-confidence. Plus, with good oral hygiene at home and check-ups and cleanings at the San Diego Dental Implant Center, All-On-Four implants last for years and years.

What are dental implants?
When you lose a tooth, a series of effects begin to take place. The bone in which the missing tooth once sat begins to degrade, losing its volume in a process known as bone atrophy. This causes the facial skin to begin to cave in and sag. The teeth surrounding the missing tooth begin to shift to compensate for the new, extra room around them. Dentists use dental implants to replace a missing tooth and its root, helping avoid the effects of a missing tooth and giving you a full smile. The implant lies within the bone under your missing tooth, making it a permanent, non-removable addition to your smile.
How do implant-supported dentures work?
Implant-supported dentures use four or more implants spaced throughout an arch in the mouth to hold a denture in place. Depending on the system you and your periodontist choose, your implant-supported denture may be removable or remain permanently in place. The denture snaps or secures into place on top of the implants, securely replacing your missing teeth and allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with the peace of mind that your dentures will remain in your mouth, where they belong.

If you think you can benefit from implant-supported dentures, consulting with your periodontist will allow you to address any questions or concerns you may have and determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. Though most people who have missing teeth can benefit from dental implants, not everyone is a good candidate, making it important to discuss this with your dentist.

What is a dental implant?
It's an artificial tooth which has a titanium root placed directly in the jaw bone. Dr. Joseph Yang uses these state-of-the-art prosthetics to close smile gaps caused by gum disease, oral trauma, dental abscess, or extensive decay. Tooth replacement avoids the deleterious effects of tooth loss--namely, bone and gum recession, compromised biting, chewing and speech, and aged facial appearance.
Attached to the titanium root are an extension post and porcelain crown. Over time, the implant itself bonds with the jaw bone through osseointegration. Only oral injury or an infection called peri-implantitis (similar to gum disease) can compromise this extraordinary bond.
Who can get dental implants?
Most adults and older teens can if they have sufficient bone in their jaws. While smokers may receive implants, the periodontist at San Diego Dental Implant Center strongly advise smoking cessation or at least, abstaining from tobacco for three to four days before implant placement.
Also, you can qualify even if you are missing several teeth. Dr. Yang offers All-on-4 teeth in a day. Permanently secured to four strategically placed dental implants, the All-on-4 denture provides an incredibly stable fit and feel so you are confident as your smile, laugh, eat and talk.
For partial tooth loss, we offer implant-secured bridges. Besides affording the strength and natural function which dental implants are known for, implant-secured bridges replace two or more teeth in a row, nicely filling those unsightly and dysfunctional gaps.
The process and aftercare
It starts with a complete oral exam, and X-rays. Then, your San Diego periodontist devises a treatment plan tailored to your specific preferences and oral health needs. Most implant procedures require simple local anesthesia, and all oral surgeries are performed in-office.
After you receive your prosthetics, you care for them just as you do your natural teeth:
- Brush twice a day
- Floss daily
- Get six-month check-ups and cleanings
